In our online Drawing for illustration lesson we looked at limbs of the body and how we consider them as a 'series of intertwined and overlapping forms'. A life drawing can be created in many styles from skeleton, gesture, volume/forms and also contour lines. However, when thinking about overlapping forms it can be hard to jump straight into contour lines.
Therefore in my drawings below you can see I've worked in a process of drawing firstly the skeleton, this helps me identify how the arm of limb is sitting and pieced together. Once I have the proportions I can think about adding the muscle. This allows me to add more structure to the drawing before finalising with the skin line. Not only does this process work for limbs but also overlapping poses as whole. These were my first three sketches based around the anatomy of the arm, I was happy with how these progressed and felt I was able to capture the Volumetric form well. However, I found the second drawing with the fist facing the camera to be much harder. This is a good example of overlapping form as it shows the lower arm to be much shorter and almost not visible. I definitely struggled more than the other two however, felt it still looked quite effective and with more practise coulee look proportionally correct.

The second sketch I created focused more on the human body as a whole. For this I found inspiration from Pinterest looking at fashion photography and poses that models use. I chose this photo as my reference for my first sketch as felt it had a simplistic element to start however still had the example of overlapping forms in the arms that are sat behind the head. For this I began with the skeleton look at the placement of the shoulder and the hips as her hips as slanted to the right from the shoulders making the pose slightly more interesting. Once I was happy with the skeleton and muscle I added the skin line creating more of a stronger line work to the piece. Although I was happy with this drawing I did feel it lacked character in some elements and maybe felt too simple.

The third drawing I did as part of this series was also taken from Pinterest. I wanted to expand the pose and go for something a bit more technical, so as seen the model seems to be doing a dancer pose with her legs overlapping. I enjoyed creating this drawing as it had a fun element within the pose I also felt I captured the elegance of the model as well as some of the characteristics within her hair and detail on the limbs. Once again I began with the skeleton before developing to the muscle and the skin, I really enjoyed this process and could see the difference with the proportions as it felt easier then going straight into the contour lines.

The fourth drawing was more of a simple standing pose however, I wanted to do this as I liked the way her stance was slightly tilted the left making the right leg appear longer. Like the others I began with the Skelton process marking out the body and stance. Overall I was happy with this design, it appear simplistic however also effective. However, I did feel like there was a lack of character within this drawing and therefore could of been added to and improved.

The fifth drawing I completed I wanted to be much more complicated and add to that idea of overlapping forms so I chose this photo of a model. In the photo the model can be seen standing on her one leg kicking her left towards the camera making her leg appear both bigger and longer. I wanted to capture this perfectly therefore I began with the skeleton making sure the left leg was much longer. I then added the skin and muscle, I also chose to add clothes in this image as the photo shows the model in baggy clothes therefore its hard to know where the legs actually sit. I still think it looks effective and instead captures character. Overall I was happy with this illustration, I found it difficult however, I still think it look effective.
For the final sketch I wanted to develop my practise further by experimenting with s bitting down pose. I chose this particular photo from Pinterest and felt it worked well with the idea of foreshortening and overlapping elements with the arm being wrapped infant of the chest and the left leg bent in a sitting position. Like the other sketches I began with the skeleton layer, this was a crucial part for this drawing as the proportions were hard to complete. Once doing this I added muscle and skin layers therefore adding to the overall character of the life drawing. I was happy with how this drawing came out, there were definatly elements which I feel could be improved on such a detail of facial features and hands and feet however overall I felt I captured the aims of the brief.
