The final week of our life drawing session includes looking specifically at colour and how it can be used in life drawing. To create these colours coloured lights were used to create shadows full of colours and tonal details.
The first drawing I produced was more of a close up. I chose to work from this camera as I wanted to start the session by focusing on details and really focusing on how the coloured light would fall against the body. To create this drawing i used oil pastels which are a heavy medium for life drawing however, when thinking about colour i feel they can be quite effective as they allow me to blend however also create a large contrast between colours. I really liked this first image as I love the way i captured the green light on the left side of the body whilst focusing on the highlights of the red on the right side of the body. I was happy with the detail of the light I captured however, there was a lack of detail within the facial area and therefore, lacked information and character. However this is something I wanted to work on and develop in the next up coming drawings.
The second drawing I completed included much moe detail within the face and also the shadows. This time the lights switches and instead the red colour became more prominent within the drawing. For this piece i also kept to oil pastel as I enjoyed using this media as i like the way the colours blended. As well as blending the colour with lighter and negative space I also combined the red and green pastels layering them together to create a darker colour to create a thick shadow which would really contrast against the lighter skin areas. However, Sometimes when blending these colours it appeared to become muddy and slightly too heavy for the traditional loose life drawing style. However, I was much happier with how this drawing developed as felt by including for facial detail the overall image had more character and really reflected the model and his aura.
The third and final drawing of the session was focusing on the idea of colour, and pattern within clothing. To do this I use two medias, pencil and oil pastel. I began by drawing the figure in pencil using cross hatching to capture shadow and light whilst also using the line work to bring character and detail int the capturing of the model. I wanted this light media to contrast against the heavy blending and layering of the oil pastel. I used a range of blues to create light and how it falls on the clothes to create a range of different hues. The models clothes also including a vivid pattern which i also wanted to capture. Therefore I scraped back into the oil pastel to create a release and therefore show the pattern. However, unfortunately when creating this drawing I was unable to finish the pattern.
Overall I was happy with how my drawings turned out as felt they captured the aims of the session whilst further focusing on the details of the figure and further developing my practise to help improve my sill when it comes to life drawing. I feel over the past four sessions I have seen a key development within my work with better sense of understanding for life drawing and proportions.
