Depth
For the third week of life drawing we were to focus on the depth of the drawing as well as specifically focusing on the positions of the feet and hands. For this session. Chose to work in charcoal on cartridge paper specifically in an A4 sketchbook. This is smaller than the traditional life drawing canvas however, I felt it worked well for this session.
The first drawing as seen above was simple standing pose, I began by drawing the skeleton using pencil. This allowed me to create a guide for the drawing before adding in detail using charcoal sticks. I liked using charcoals as it allowed me to create strong marks that showed depth and tonal details. Although I did like the use of line work I felt the overall style and pose lacked character and therefore this is something I would have liked to develop in the next drawing.
The second drawing was another standing pose however focusing from a side profile. In this drawing I began by really focusing on the feet placement, drawing a guide in which could help me when thinking about the posture and proportions. Like the first one I used charcoal to create strong lines in which show depth whilst also adding tonal detail such as shadows. I was much happier with this drawing as felt it was full of character and captured the shape of the model whilst also using the charcoal to create strong lines.
The third drawing from this session was not only about placement of feet but also the placement of the model’s hands. In this pose the model leant against a giant block with checkered taping marks this way I am able to see how the hands sit apart by distance. Like the previous two drawings I used charcoal and began by drawing a skeleton that will help guide me when it comes to the overlapping forms. As well as strong line work I also use cross hatching style details using charcoal to capture tonal detail such as shading and light spots. Overall I was happy with the figure as felt it captured the character however feel the hand placement did sit wrong and also a lack of detail.
The fourth drawing was different from the first three as features more of a seated pose in which the model is seen leant against the block with guides. This allowed me to experiment with foreshortening depth and also placement of hands and feet. I was really lly happy with this final drawing as felt it captured the details perfectly whilst using strong line work to add depth to the overall artwork. In this piece I also used the charcoal in a blending style technique to help capture the lighting including the shadow of the model which fell against the block behind. I felt this work effectively and helped capture the true character of the models figure.
Overall I was happy with how this session progressed however there are still elements that i intend to improve on. For example, in these drawings there seemed to be a lack of character with facial features and details missing due to lack of time. Although not all life drawings include facial features I still feel it would have added to the overall drawing by capturing the model within his environment. I also feel some of the feet were place wrong and slightly off proportion however this i something i can work on moving forward in future life drawing sessions.
