This was the second life drawing that I attended, to which it had been switched to online via teams and blackboard. The session was focusing on viewpoints and overall how the human body could be captured using different medias. For this session I started working simply with graphite however, I found this was not working for me as I couldn't capture the fluidity in my line work. Therefore in the second half I swapped and began working with black Indian ink and a brush. I enjoyed how this media looked and felt it help me develop a character within my drawings whilst capturing the essence of the pose. There are elements that feel proportionally off or a lack of detail such as the feet and hands however, this is something I aim to work on in the next few sessions.
Viewpoints
This drawing above was the first of the session, I began working with graphite and a mechanical pencil focusing on the skeleton to begin before adding muscle and skin to create the character of the figure. I felt I captured the pose well however, felt the line work felt weak in places especially around the hands and feet where they’re out of proportion compared to the rest of the body. I wasn’t as keen on how this media was used and didn’t feel it was expressive enough.
Therefore, when working on the next drawing I switched to different media working with Indian ink and water to create different dilutions. This helps create tone whilst also focusing on lighting. In this pose we were to focus on the the foot placement using the lines box as a guide for stance. I was much happier with this drawing as felt it was more expressive and captured the character of the model. I also liked the use of ink and felt i was able to capture the shadows and lighting perfectly. I wanted to keep to this style of working therefore for the next pose I kept to working with Indian ink and brush
The next two drawings were both of the same pose however taken from two different angles from both the teams and blackboard camera. The first was drawn using a viewpoint that looked down on the model whilst the second came from a lower level looking up. For both I started with the skeleton using a slight guide with pencil to help create the character of the pose. Once I was happy with my placements I worked back into the drawings using the ink to create the skin. I used the dark thick ink to create clear outlines that show strong line work, Once I added the skin outline I diluted the ink using water to create tone on the skin showing lighting and how it may fall on the body.
Overall I am happy with how these drawings came out, I felt they developed over the session, and although there are many more improvements that need to be made and developed. Next session I would like to focus more on placement and line work as well as focusing on details on the hands and feet.
